The word 'Upazila' was derived from Bangla in 1982. The concept came into existence formally with the adoption of a new administrative and local government services system. The term 'Upazila' has no proper equivalent word in English. Sadar, thana, tehsi, and taluk are the equivalent words of Upazila in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka accordingly, but the attributes are not the same in comparison to the Upazila. The Upazila is the tenth biggest local government tier of Bangladesh. It is not the biggest community-level administrative body in the state. However, to this day, Upazila is about to come as the top administrative body at the first level below the center. The Upazila is a cooperative organization of these different units, but a modern centralized and decentralized organizational structure through which various services and administrative functions can be smoothly and effectively supervised, directed, conducted, and performed.
